The recently announced Gartner ‘Supply Chain Top 25’ for 2014 has attracted some comment surrounding the criteria used for shippers to be assessed for inclusion in the list. Also on the radar of supply chain commentators was the validity of the assessment given that the majority of large enterprises outsource some or all of their global logistics processes.
While it’s true that the businesses assessed include only the largest companies by revenue, with service revenue discounted and so disqualifying some of the major technology companies, the list does act as a useful litmus test for which brands are performing well in supply chain terms because the judging process includes peer review as well as that of Gartner’s supply chain specialists. Yes, it’s somewhat subjective, but aren’t all rankings?
What is particularly interesting to Kewill is the role played by major LSPs in making these supply chains award winning. Our supply chain execution software is used by businesses at each stage of the supply chain, and so we have customers who are manufacturers, retailers & distributors and every form of LSP from domestic road transport providers to global freight forwarders and customs brokers.
Supply chain success is underpinned by collaboration and co-operation across all trading partners in a truly demand driven supply network. Supply chain execution should no longer be seen as a cost center, but an opportunity to create strategic advantage. We’ve clearly seen how shippers and LSPs who, by working together and striving for excellence through ongoing investments in technology and collaboration, reap the rewards through better agility, visibility and customer service and ultimately in improved margins
Back to the Gartner Supply Chain Top 25, we undertook some analysis of the companies included and were able to identify that 68% are customers currently using our supply chain execution software to manage some or all of their operations.
Importantly, many of the LSPs that support the supply chain operations of the Top 25, as well as the regional suppliers and transportation partners that play a critical role pre and post production, are also Kewill customers, which highlights the achievements of all the third party organizations that do their part to make these supply chains award winning (and, we hope, the supporting role played by our supply chain execution software).
